Three Sentence Ficathon 2021

We have now opened a new post, for new prompts! Please leave all new prompts there. You may continue to fill existing prompts here. If you didn't get a prompt filled here, feel free to post it on the new post!

Welcome to the Three Sentence Ficathon!
2 Feb. 2021 See important edit below regarding where to find unfilled prompts.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is an open exchange where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and fill as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What happens after that?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

I'm really overwhelmed by all the prompts and how much there is and how fast it goes. I can't read 1,000 prompts and fills. It's too much.
I hear this a lot and it keeps a lot of people from participating.  The 3SF is big and it moves fast, especially at first.
I get overwhelmed, too, and I'm hosting the thing. With 2020 and 2021 sucking so badly you don't want something that's supposed to be fun cause you anxiety.  I have a couple of suggestions for managing the 3SF volume.
  • First, really, you don't have to read every prompt and fill on every page.  You can start at the last page of this and just go forward, or back a page or two.  It's fine.
  • You can come and go as time and energy allow, you don't have to participate the whole time, and it drops off quite a bit by mid-February.
  • Even after the 3SF and new prompting end, people fill prompts all year long.
  • You can fill an already filled prompt and you can can leave a prompt that's already been prompted before.  People do it all the time.
Always make sure you're looking at top-level comments only, not threaded. That helps a lot. Your screen should look like this.

But shouldn't I read everything to see if someone already prompted the same prompt I want to leave if someone already filled it?

No.  Prompt as many times as you want, as much as you want.  It doesn't matter if someone prompted the exact same prompt.  Go ahead and prompt again!

I left a prompt and no one filled it.  Can I prompt it again?
Absolutely!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. I generally fail at creating banners and embed codes but if you create one and make it really idiot-proof, I might be able to post and share it.  Feel free to cross-post this entry. If you create your own banners or icons, let me know and I'll share!
Please share the 3SF with your followers, friends, and any channels and comms you are active on.  I'll post on fandom calendar, Tumblr, and Twitter, but I don't have many connections in other spaces such as Discord.

How long will it go?

The 3SF closes to new prompts on February 28, 2021. The entry stays open permanently and people post fills all year long.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content and archive warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought a lot about this. It boils down to reader beware.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings to even apply. It is too big for me to moderate in this way. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and the responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. This means AO3 content warnings for dubcon, violence, canon character death, underage, etc. COULD be present. I've found personally that I can skim and scroll by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing. In this format, the obligation is on you, the reader, to protect yourself from triggering content.
Some posters do include warnings and spoiler tags in subject lines or include spoiler space, but they don't have to do so.

Why is 3SF split among several posts?  That seems confusing.
It is confusing and we always lose momentum once we have to move to a second post. The reason is because at 5,000 comments to a single post, DW installs a human test CAPTCHA, which is a pain for users.  So, once this entry gets to the upper 4,000 comments, I open a new post.  If you've been waiting until things slow down to participate, when we open a second post is often a good place to join.

If I have questions, what do I do?

I'm rthstewart everywhere, here, Twitter, Tumblr, gmail and AO3.

Last year's (2020) unfilled prompts are here.
Conuly asks that you not reply, as they want to be able to edit and add more prompts to the list.
Conuly does this just because they are an awesome person but should you want to write them fic in thanks, you can find a birthday wish list here.

Here is the 3SF 2021 Friending Meme to show of your new DW account.

Here, have some icons and banners and let me know if you've created your own!

Rogue One, Cassian/Jyn

[personal profile] kaminagi 2021-02-10 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
"She's so quiet, I think we got lucky for once," Jyn whispers, peering at the tiny bundle in her arms, as Cassian tries not to laugh when the baby emits the smallest snore he's ever heard.

"They said she's just tired, so we need to enjoy this while it lasts," he murmurs, his forehead pressed against Jyn's temple as his hand gently supports their daughter's head.

When the baby opens her eyes and blinks at their own little family, the beginning of her world, here is a marvel he thinks, and softly sings a old tune until she falls asleep again.

Kin And Kith (LoZ: Breath of the Wild, Link + Zelda)

[personal profile] fallen_stage 2021-02-10 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Link didn't remember much about anything, but bits and pieces emerges as they walked in the world again. Nothing to replace a lifetime of memory, but enough to put names to faces.

Grasping the hilt of a sword, the gleam of a blade, the smell of metal and blood, of sword oil, and Link was struck with the warm feeling of a man. Tall, strong, steady, larger and darker hands over Link's own as they held a sword for the first time. A knight, wearing armor with a red bird on the tabard. Not a noble, but a soldier, who taught Link right from wrong (or tried to). Father.

The crack of an egg, the smell of hot fat, flour turning to dough under their hands. A plump woman, hair as toasty golden-brown as Link's own, folding sheets of cold butter with short hands. Sitting by her oven and marble slab, whisking an ocean of eggs and stoning a mountain of fruit. Watching how she shaped a pie, fold a cake, holding her hand in the oven and chanting a prayer to Din for success so the pastry wouldn't burn. Even in the wilderness, Link could put a lid on a pot after pouring in the batter and pile it with the right amount of coals. Mama.

The crackle of a hearth, a warm and strong hug, a toothy smile, the smell of sun on stone. Laughter over a meal, welcome after a long day, bright colors of the clothe shirts he wore over his craggy body. Being lifted and tossed into the air, taken by the hand and led up mountains, immense hands so delicate when weaving grasses or flowers. The tinkle of glass as Link gives a gift of Goron candy and he happily eats it. Pops.

And the most memories of all, the ones that come quickest and clearest from the smallest things. The way the sun strikes through an arch, the smell of rain on grass, the chirp of desert crickets. A girl that pushed and pulled, confided and teased, shared her triumphs and frustrations. An unpleasant chore that Link found instead to be a rewarding friendship.

(Their mothers knew each other, and well. When the chef talked about her talented child, the queen listened, hoping that wasn't just parent talk. It'd be so nice for her own little girl to have someone to play with who would love her for her. She lay a hand over her swollen belly as the chef braided dough.)

"Do you... remember me?"

Link nodded, but then made a seesawing motion with their hand, and Zelda startled into a laugh, then something more like a sob. The answer, the gesture, were so painfully familiar, and yet neither could Link be described as unchanged. They were looser, louder, ruder even, more relaxed and happy than she had seen in.... a very, very, very long time.

"That's... more than I could have ever hoped. Link, even if things are not the same, I am so glad my dearest friend is near."

Link nodded again, serious. "Twins."

This time her laugh was completely undignified, more like halfway between a squawk and a snort than anything a princess should make. Of all things..!

"Link!! Still? That's what you remember??"

"Twins!" They insisted, grinning in the very same way as when they always teased her, when the two were alone and away from judging eyes.

"We aren't even the same age! Shouldn't you be the responsible older sibling? Some guardian!"

"Only by two million, six hundred twenty nine thousand, and eight hundred minutes."

With her suspicions and knowledge of Link's age, Zelda made quick work of the calculation. Easy to guess what that meant.

"Why you..!" She leaned over and grabbed a handful of grass and threw it at them, not caring that the impotent missiles fluttered to the ground instead of striking the intended target. "You're the most outrageous twin anyone's ever had!"

Laughing right back, Link was glad. Maybe everyone else was dead at gone, but they had at least one family member alive, and it was their duty as the eldest to make her happy.

Eyes Full of Stars

“Ah,” she says, nodding, molding her expression carefully into one of great concern, “but of course, my lord - I should have guessed that one so talented with his hands would not be so with his feet, and it was foolish of me to presume you could dance as well as you can craft - that is, if all the stories are to be taken true.”

As expected, that causes his gaze to shift, to sharpen its focus upon her (and oh, how she holds her body carefully still at it, so as not to shiver straight through), and those glorious hands she’d spoken of to shoot forth, grasping hers as he pulled her out into the open courtyard, grinding out, “I assure you they are, and you will find, my lady, that I am just as talented with feet and mind as I am with my hands, and can prove it well,” and though she knows the danger, her tongue runs ahead of her, to say, “And with your mouth, too?” His wolfish grin is her only response, gleaming in the light as they orbit one another, and she knows she is truly lost.

“You were magnificent,” he tells her, low and gruff and loving, and very much for her ears only, after he’s watched her play her role as Narnian Ambassador, charming Robyn Arryn, verbally sparring with Olenna Tyrell, and keeping a firm hold on Tyrion Lannister’s typically loquacious tongue.

“That’s Peter’s word,” she says, and laughs, though he doesn’t, only stares at her until her breath catches.

“Not to me, it isn’t.”

Oh my god, wow, this is astounding, I love it so much (This is ElementalRaven again by the way, as you probably guessed)! I love that you included the Trickster, and that the Calormene gods are once again hating on Aslan (and in this case at least, it is entirely justified). I love the most that Susan wants this, so much, and that for once she takes what she wants. It kind of reminds me of Peter's journey back in England to learn that what he wants to do is also what he should be doing, only Susan learns this here and probably entirely unlike Aslan wanted, which is kind of funny to me. So curious about Susan's future as a priestress of Azaroth, I suppose this also means Aslan won't be able to send her back, since she is not his anymore, which is potentially very tragic depending on whether he does take back Susan's siblings. So many possibilities

Some decades after Xena’s death in Jappa, Eve was helping Gabrielle prepare all her scrolls for publication by a renowned scroll seller in Athens, a task neither was taking lightly.

“Hm,” said Eve, frowning at one particular sentence that stuck out to her; “Gabrielle, you’re missing a word or two here — you wrote that you put your fingers inside Xena, instead of putting them inside Xena’s something or other.”

With a glance at the old papyrus, Gabrielle said, “No, that’s correct,” without so much as a blush, for age and wisdom had rid her of youthful afflictions such as embarrassment.

The problem with being a spaceship that is also home to a bunch of humans is that you hear everything going on while they're on board. Hearing them cook or talk about the news or the weather back on Earth is dull, hearing them have sex is mortifying, and hearing them get injured or even die is unbearable, more than you could describe even if you could communicate. But worst of all is hearing them prepare for battle or other risky business, hearing their plans to put your body on the line yet again with no regard for anyone but themselves.

Author's Notes

[personal profile] fallen_stage 2021-02-10 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
staples together 7 headcanons into a ficlet.

partly inspired by my twin sister and i treating the 7 minutes' difference between use very seriously. For those bad at math, link is 5 years older; zelda is (1)17 and link is (1)22. link first started the twins joke since the two looked very similar, and also since zelda is taller despite the age difference (link being taller than zelda is illegal dont @ me). i really love botw zelda and link as being (adoptive) sibs, i think it's really cute and sweet.

Link didnt find babysitting zelda to be an "unpleasant chore"; its just that the royal guards all dreaded being picked for guard duty to an unruly and resentful princess. Link, however, being much closer in age than her, didn't have the same attitude as a middle aged guard and found being out of the stuffy castle with its scrutiny a breath of fresh air. so in the end, everyone was happy with the arrangement! I often think about how Link must have been extremely awkward being fucking captain of the royal guard, promoted way way too early in their career thanks to goddesses distributing swords being an accepted form of authority in hyrule would definitely ruffle some feathers of older, more experienced candidates who were vying for that role as a career goal.

Link can have three parents!! Their Father and Pops are a married couple, a human knight and a goron stay at home dad. Their Mama is a childhood friend of the Father, a lesbian, head royal pastry chef, and link's bio mom. Link can have loving coparenting as a treat. Pops wears hawaiian style shirts like in windwaker, bc i always liked those. i should really come up with real names...

by the by, you really can make cake over a fire, but it does take some skill... basically you get a dutch oven, flour the inside well, and heap coals over + around it and turn it frequently to prevent any hot spots overcooking bits. you can find tutorials on youtube for dutch oven cake! i think being able to make a spongecake this way is the greatest testament to link's cooking skills.
