yep it's all a dumpster fire but so much good media
Except the Season 5 Expanse trailer dropped and after the first 3 episodes drop, they will be going to weekly, so I'm thrilled.
So it looks like we're going to get some variation of the "Don't call me Chrissie" and "I think she likes me." And honestly if we don't get that epic encounter from Nemesis Games nearly word for word, I'll cry. Also, interesting and sad that Cas Anvar is so de-emphasized in the trailer and wasn't included on the NYCC cast panel. I assume the reason is the ongoing investigation into the many reports of his harassing conduct at Cons.
The Mandalorian is coming. Also, I really enjoyed Enola Holmes. It's super fun and on Netflix and there's a new series of GBBO.
And of course The Old Guard on Netflix which is very much this season's favorite fandom flavor. I loved it. I've watched it about 5 times and that scene where the team is going through Merrick? Yeah, I've watched that as many times as I've watched opening sequence of Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing, now on Amazon Prime. 20? 30? I kinda start my day with it.
And then there is Dune. I'm one of those people who read Dune right after being bitterly disappointed in the Foundation Trilogy probably 40 years ago. I loved the book, hated the sequels, and it's one of those books that I'm frightened to go back and read because I might not love it and I know that whole white savior thing would really bother me now. Still, the trailer looks amazing and gender bend Liat Kynes, YES PLEASE.
Also, my old story Food for Thought got recc'd on fanacke by the lovelybeatrice_otter so that was super nice.
And Snapes on the Astral Plane is back with this piece from Jezebel, a lot of which I don't agree with but it's fun to revisit a favorite wank and I
guess some Kylo Ren fans are upset with the comparison. I'm not touching that one.
Are you reading or seeing anything fun? What's made you happy during these grim times?
In not so nice, and as I bitched on Twitter, a small Narnia comm running a gift exchange on Tumblr decided to ban me for being a pedo because of the Lucy/Caspian ship. The lovely WingedFlight had had this problem with this group last year when Winged got banned for including the ship in the sign up and I thought, well, let's test the waters with a GEN request and an offer to write anything. Nope. They went through my account and determined I wasn't "safe" for their participants because my postings indicated I supported a ship that they said is pedo because of the Dawn Treader movie. Given my many run ins with the Narnia fandom purity police over the years, getting banned over this from a comm wasn't something I had on my personal 2020 Bingo Card. And its super weird given what I've been doing for the last 10 years supporting young people in and coming out of abusive environments. But hey, their exchange, their rules.
The best though was that I spoke to my college senior spawn T3 today. He's fannish and has his own AO3 account and met his GF on Discord. (No, we don't read one another's work and don't follow each other on Twitter). He wanted to talk to me because the same day he had a run in with a purity police person who said that his idea for an enemies to lovers story was "pedo-coded" because there was an 18 vs. 21 age difference and a 12 inch/30 CM height difference. Also that he was a homophobe because he hadn't written a popular m/m ship. "Mom, I just know you'll appreciate this given your problems with purity police"
So we had a GREAT conversation about similarities between qanon and purity police though, of course the fandom purity police are just outing and harassing people, not shooting up pizza parlors or trying to kidnap a governor. yet.
And then I introduced him to fandom wank. He knew all about Cassie Clare, the leather pants, and the plagiarism but had never heard the term. So I told him about Snapwives and My wife. The Horse and the tin hats and Crystal Wank and just wasn't up to describing MsScribe except "sock puppets." And then we talked about our own personal efforts to unpack our systemic racism and where we were succeeding and where we were failing and what were both doing to elect Democrats. The Force Runs Strong In My Family.
