Three Sentence Ficathon -- Part 2

EDIT AS OF 2 FEBRUARY 2019 -- THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS OVER!  Go ahead and read and fill anything that catches your eye and comment on fills but I'm not checking it anymore and most people have moved on so any new prompts aren't likely to get much love.

We are nearing the point that the first 3SF post, which went live on 12 December, is nearing 4,600 comments. At 5,000 comments, Dreamwidth starts demanding captcha to assure you aren't a spammer bot. It's a pain and unpleasant but totally understandable. So, I'm opening a new post, for new prompts, new fills, new comments!

What does this mean?
The original 3SF post is here, so be sure to check it out, fill anything that catches your eye, and comment on anything that delights you. But don't post any new prompts there. All new prompts go here.

How long will we do this?
I will officially close the 3SF on January 31.

Does that mean you'll close this and no one can post?
Nope. It just means that we will all move on in our lives until next year and my inbox will get a vacation to Hawaii.

Remind me again, what's the 3SF?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What's a prompt?  How do I do that?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. Banners and icons are below.

How long will it go?
We'll officially close on January 31, 2019 but I don't close the entry to comments.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
So far, as near as I can tell (and I skim most entries especially from newcomers I don't recognize) we've not had any issues. As in the past, this is too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. As a reader, use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

I have noticed that some people have posted content warnings in the first lines of their fill or in the subject line. But still, it's readers beware here. Not everyone does this and no one is under any obligation to do so.

Wow, there are so many cool people here. Can I introduce myself?
Yes, in the Friending meme.

There were a lot of hidden air pockets in Atlantis, Arthur found, and Mera seemed determined to take him to each and every one of them, no matter how small or out of the way or strange they were. He would have minded being dragged all across the city more if it didn’t also mean that he was thus left with less time for the seemingly endless meetings — which he hated, but was told were necessary and unavoidable — with advisors and ambassadors and anyone else who just had to have a moment with the king.

Well, and the fact that they could also take a few minutes in the relative privacy of the air pockets to kiss, pressed up against corals or enormous stones or the wood of old ships, and explore each other’s bodies as well as the space certainly helped a lot too.

Re: Fill: Dragon Age, Varric Tethras x2 (+Cassandra)

[personal profile] little_lady_d 2019-01-24 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
this is wonderful! i love varric's poetic defense of poetic license, of using a lie to underscore the truth, so deftly you can't uncouple one from another without muddling both. it's a writer’s job to make you see the core of things, people, things that happened, and that includes making stuff up. but i also love how he gets straight to the point when confronted by cassandra, all poetics aside, of course he lied, he lied for a friend. and cassandra is so righteous and vicious and. this is so good.

Now, this was interesting--in retrospect, I really need to read more fic set in Carolmen. Anyway, this was great.

My knowledge of this show is passing at best--despite the fact that's my dad's favorite Star Trek show--but this was really neat, especially the juxtaposition and the careful not-lying are great. Thanks for this.

Hank thinks the only way to make this fostering scheme work is for Charles to erase the kids' memories as they leave the mansion, but Charles refuses to do it, even for the kids who stay for only a few nights – too haunted by what he did to Moira.

But Corey, Kathryn and all the children that follow them are so visibly relieved to find a place where they can push themselves around, explore and feel at home, that Hank comes to accept that they'll keep the mansions’ secrets. Like Charles, he does his best for them, having learned from his students that it's about ability, whether you're a disabled or mutant kid.

[personal profile] runespoor 2019-01-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The washbasins miraculously hold out until they reach the temple, and Raine collapses in giddy relief when her feet finally step onto steady ground again; for a minute, all she can do is breathe and feel her heart settle down.

Lloyd and Genis are looking over the buckets with something that could be incomprehension or could be glee - Genis has his hands on his hips in an attitude copied from her (fascination and indignation are neighbour provinces in their family's inner maps; both appeal to their instincts for why and how and the hell) - and she catches snippets of their conversation: "--guess it was safe after all, I wonder if it's magic--", "--try and use a spell on the way back to see if it rocks, that might tell us if there’s magic on theml" - which steals the breath right out of her throat -- and "that'd be so cool!"

Her fingers claw as though grasping for a stub of chalk to throw at them, but of course, this isn't her classroom, and for a furious, incandescent second Raine hates every step of the reasoning that led her here, on a tiny island she had to row to in a washbasin to reach, as though just crossing the sea isn't unplesant enough even in actual ships, and that she’ll have to leave same way; Genis glances at her, blanches, and adds through a gulp, "ooooor maybe I'll check if there are spells on them by using magic to make the sea even calmer, huh, that could definitely work!"

The music from the ballroom is a little muffled, a little distant, but they dance to it all the same, alone on the balcony. Tomorrow they'll return to their duties, see the consequences of the Empress that died tonight and seal their alliance with the puppetmaster they put in power in her stead, all in the name of the fight against Corypheus; but the night is theirs.

She cannot quite forget that their enemy would tear the sky open should they fail to oppose him - the mark shining in the palm of her hand would not let her, even if she wanted to - but for tonight, she sets it aside; she has brought the ages-old traditions of Orlais down and left its strength standing, and as she twirls, her hand resting on her partner's, the stars above glitter like so many shards, reflected in both their smiles.

This is a continuation of the Changeling Verse I've been writing with [personal profile] little_lady_d

Alive or dead, Hamlet is his prince, and Horatio must follow. But there’s the question: does loyalty mean standing by him in the earth beyond the Underhill, or standing by him in the stories he shares with those who remain?

He doesn’t even know whether his duty is to support him or replace him, because Hamlet was never stronger than the hour he fell.

Fill: Twelfth Night

[personal profile] ernest 2019-01-25 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
The truth is: the boy Olivia loved never really existed and the man she married is a poor substitute for his sister.

The truth is: Viola misses the months she wore that other skin, so badly she sometimes wonders if the girl is a lie.

The truth is: Sebastian already had someone who would have followed him anywhere, and he only hopes he hasn’t lost his chance with that brave sailor.

[personal profile] ernest 2019-01-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
When a spirit’s time has ended it suffuses into a form even less substantial than before, unable to effect any change at all, or if royalty, its essence settles into the land itself and strengthens the bones. This shade of a shade is too real, too present, something from which the mortals would shudder with even more terror than from the Nothingness that claws at their sleeves in the presence of ordinary sprites.

The gaze of the thing which used to be his father the king drags him to his knees; “Speak,” Hamlet rasps out, “I am bound to hear.”

Yuri!!! on Ice, Otabek Altin/Yuri Plisetsky

[personal profile] ranalore 2019-01-25 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Build Me Up (Better Together)

"Are you ready for this?" Otabek asks him, a glint of shiny blue visible above the collar of his warm-up jacket.

Yuri just slants him a look, and hopes the nerves don't show. "Are you?" he asks, in his best imitation of Lilia's aloofness.

Naturally, Otabek isn't fooled. He steps right into Yuri's personal space, meets Yuri's raised chin with a warm hand on his face, the other at his hip, framing him in. Otabek asks again, steady, "Are you ready?"

This is Yuri's third Grand Prix in the Senior division. He's won gold the last two. Of all the men here, he's the one with the least reason for anxiety, and that includes Victor Nikiforov. Yuri should be calming Otabek, really; Otabek took silver last year in a surprise upset, and has been the subject of more press speculation and harassment than Yuri, Nikiforov, and Katsudon put together.

Yet, they went for a long bike ride earlier, which is the best thing for Otabek's nerves. Yuri got into a shouting match with Yakov earlier too, and that expelled a lot of pent-up anxiety. There's always this extra jolt, though, just before the event starts. He used to throw things, trying to feel some control.

Otabek's hands anchor him in his body. Otabek's question makes him focus, quiets the noise in his head. He breathes in Otabek, breathes out, "Yes."

Otabek presses closer, whispers just before their lips meet, "Davai."
