Three Sentence Ficathon -- Part 2

EDIT AS OF 2 FEBRUARY 2019 -- THE 3 SENTENCE FICATHON IS OVER!  Go ahead and read and fill anything that catches your eye and comment on fills but I'm not checking it anymore and most people have moved on so any new prompts aren't likely to get much love.

We are nearing the point that the first 3SF post, which went live on 12 December, is nearing 4,600 comments. At 5,000 comments, Dreamwidth starts demanding captcha to assure you aren't a spammer bot. It's a pain and unpleasant but totally understandable. So, I'm opening a new post, for new prompts, new fills, new comments!

What does this mean?
The original 3SF post is here, so be sure to check it out, fill anything that catches your eye, and comment on anything that delights you. But don't post any new prompts there. All new prompts go here.

How long will we do this?
I will officially close the 3SF on January 31.

Does that mean you'll close this and no one can post?
Nope. It just means that we will all move on in our lives until next year and my inbox will get a vacation to Hawaii.

Remind me again, what's the 3SF?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What's a prompt?  How do I do that?
You can start 3SF by posting prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please. So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

Open ended and anthropomorphic fills are popular too, such as:

Any, Any, "I don't like sand."

or

Earth geography, sand, "I don't like humans very much, either."

What else?
You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged! (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences? Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes. Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please. Banners and icons are below.

How long will it go?
We'll officially close on January 31, 2019 but I don't close the entry to comments.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?
Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
So far, as near as I can tell (and I skim most entries especially from newcomers I don't recognize) we've not had any issues. As in the past, this is too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. As a reader, use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

I have noticed that some people have posted content warnings in the first lines of their fill or in the subject line. But still, it's readers beware here. Not everyone does this and no one is under any obligation to do so.

Wow, there are so many cool people here. Can I introduce myself?
Yes, in the Friending meme.

Ooh, this is excellent.

younger Londoners had noted Pineapple's charming resemblance to a tomb-colonist battling a Zee monster, pinched their noses, and accepted fungal interpretations of ale

I love this.

Golden or broken or lost

Lucy was the golden one. Without her, the sun was a little dimmer, colors a little duller, laughter a little quieter. But they were there, all the same, because some things were always there whether you could see them or not (the Lion’s face in the bluffs, the crown in her hair, the graves she never visited).

*

Susan never thought of herself as broken, even while everything around her was falling apart. She studied the Japanese art of kintsugi and filled her home with once broken things mended with veins of gold. It was a malleable metal, but Susan already knew from her sister that golden things were stronger than they looked.

*

Susan was never lost; like the wizard of lore, she always arrived exactly where and when she meant to. She didn’t have much more to say on the subject, aside from a few harsh words to a tabby cat one Sunday morning, but she moved through life with purpose and grace. Sometimes she went on aimless walks through deep, dark woods where the sun was veiled, the colors were muted, and all was quiet, and sometimes a golden tabby paced alongside her, and sometimes their paths diverged — but Susan always knew the way.

“That’s your great advice?” snarled Han, wrenching the Falcon around for another pass at the formerly innocuous asteroid now bristling with blaster emplacements.

“Don’t panic,” repeated Ford, “and always keep your towel with you.”

Han spared a second to glare at his passenger in disbelief while Arthur commented unbidden, “I always have trouble with the first part, but he’s quite right about the towel, actually.”

“It’s hibernating,” whispered Mary, dangling from the cliff above the cavern mouth, Peter’s strong hands wrapped securely around her ankles (“This is a terrible plan,” he had told her with that forbidding Most Royal Frown his siblings were going on about; “I have strong ankles,” she had replied, because confusion was the quickest way to change the MRF into a mere puzzled furrowed brow).

“Something about the thermal conductivity of the gold must help them maintain normothermia,” Eustace theorized from his awkward perch beside her (he had preferred a complicated system of ropes and grappling hooks that took considerably more time to set up, claiming he only felt safe at heights with wings or rigging supporting him).

“Now is not the time to take samples,” hissed Peter from above, and while Mary normally did not respond well to his habitual tone of command, this time she had to agree — there wasn’t nearly enough data on how long it took a dragon to wake from REM state for her to be comfortable probing its hoard.

On AO3

In the chaos around them, Lexa observed Clarke quietly; there was a unique strength to the Outsider that intrigued her.

It added to the air of mystery that surrounded her with all of the things that she was rumored to have done since the fall of the Mountain Men.

Confused, concerned eyes turn towards her and Lexa feels as though the very air has violently forced from her lungs; it would not be good for the Commander to been seen as a lovesick child.

As she turned away to speak with her advisors, ignoring the burn of many eyes on her back, trying to banish all thoughts of thinking that Clarke is beautiful from her mind.

Threepio couldn't speed up time, exactly, but he could make the distant past seem near at hand. "And then," he went on, "the fissure opened, and all the excess energy of hyperspace poured out into the nebula--"

"Who even programs a protocol droid to know all this stuff," Han muttered under his breath.

“No, it doesn’t, the Tao says it favors the mortal,” Reiji bites out, with his usual frown of disapproval - thinking Kaori a terrible student. “And even if it didyou’re studying to talk to the kami, and I’m going to be yo—a yojimbo, so stop being a pain and let me handle it, dumbass.”

At least he’s not saying a flat no: she wants the plums for Haru, and Reiji’s as invested in giving nice things to their common best friend as she is; still, Kaori rolls her eyes, since when does Reiji make a fuss over her climbing trees, anyway, it’s not like the tree’s going to attack her – her comment gets Reiji hollering: “it’s over a cliff and you’re not half as athletic as you think you are, you– if you want to pull that kind of stuff off you better train with me from now on!”

“And who’s this fine piece of man?” some guy who was definitely swinging for the same team asked a young Dean.

Dean narrowed his eyes at the stranger as he held on tighter to his father.

“That’s John Winchester, my Daddy.” He replied, making sure the stranger caught the inflection at the word Daddy.

Reasonable Resolution (Naruto) x2 (ish)

[personal profile] kalira 2019-01-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tobi~ That's not a real resolution at all!" Hashirama nearly wailed, his voice carrying out the not-quite-closed door of the Hokage's office.

Madara glanced sideways at his brother, who shrugged but tipped his head curiously towards the door; they moved a little closer, but didn't yet enter.

"It will take real willpower," Tobirama said, his voice painfully dry enough to make Madara snort, "and if you do insist on my taking part in this ridiculous tradition, that's my resolution for the year."

"What is it?" Izuna asked, slipping between Madara and the doorframe and into the office; Madara sighed and followed after him.

"Tobi says his resolution is-"

"Not to kill people who annoy me." Tobirama said, looking up, his lips tilted in the tiniest smirk; he ruffled the papers he held and then sighed as he looked down at them. "Unless absolutely unavoidable." he added in a low mutter.

Make New Friends

Rose would be the first to admit she was skeptical of Jade's efforts to introduce all her friends to each other -- friendship, despite many people's irrational belief, is not an inherently transitive property, and she doesn't think she has much in common with people who frequent furry sites and terrible webcomics, or forums devoted to pranks or coding experiments, respectively -- and yet, she finds herself smiling more than she's done in months as she watches red, blue, and green text mingle on her screen; it's unfortunate that the tyranny of time zones forces her to be the first to depart.

TT: I reiterate my assessment that you all need extensive therapy to delve into your myriad psychological woes, but that aside, I suppose you're not terrible company.

"I wasn't aware that anyone besides humans could catch the flu," Peter said in a puzzled tone, "but certainly, we'll do our best to organize the distribution of simples to the outlying settlements."

"Oh, it won't be necessary for all of them," said Blackbristle the Sow, squinting up toward the four thrones, "since you're quite right that most diseases stay within specific peoples, but we Swine, and many of the Cattle, and almost all of the Talking Birds do fall ill with our own types of influenza. I don't know if you've ever had to deal with a litter of sneezing, feverish Piglets, but I'd prefer not to suffer through that again, to say nothing of the time we were stuck hosting a whole flock of flu-stricken Geese."

"That is not how- how anything works!"

"There are no rules for a Heterodyne in her own Castle!" the Castle declared, rumbling unsettlingly underfoot.

Agatha spun with a mad grin, her newest death ray in one hand and an indecipherable, impossible, eye-smarting tool she had just finished designing in the other. "They're just guidelines and they were made to be BROKEN!"

The first step to fixing things is to stop making them worse, everyone says, and okay, Vriska can admit that that's logical -- you don't reach sunlight by digging a deeper hole -- but see, if you're already so deep you're halfway through the planet, climbing out would take half of forever plus who wants to trip over all the endless reminders of your failures.

And planets are round; so if you keep on digging, eventually you've got to break through to daylight on the other side of the world, and that has to be more worthwhile than giving up, right?

Right????????
