Three Sentence Ficathon

UPDATE! EDIT!
We're running into the Dreamwidth comment limits so all new prompts should be posted here Keep responding to and filling already posted prompts here, but all new ones should go to the new thread!

Someone did this banner for me a couple of years ago.  It's great, isn't it?  If it was you, please step up and take a bow!
It was
[personal profile] st_aurafina!   Thank you again!

caramelsilver ran one last year on Livejournal and I did two over here a few years ago. We'll keep it open until January 31, 2019 which should give everyone time to play a little. This is a delightful part of the online fandom community.

What is the 3 Sentence Ficathon?
This is a challenge where you answer a prompt with a fic consisting of only three sentences. It's open to all fandoms and you can post and answer as many prompts as you like, as many times as you want.

What do I do first?
You post prompts! When posting a prompt please format it this way:

fandom, character(s), prompt word/sentence.

Only one prompt per comment please.  So, for example,

Star Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi, I don't like sand."

What else?

You answer other posters' prompts in three sentences (or more if you can't stop yourself) and fill as many prompts as you want, as many times as you wish. If you see that a prompt you loved has already been filled, go ahead and fill it again! Multiple fills of the same prompt are allowed and even encouraged!  (We get really fun stories going this way).

Can I still post if I need more than 3 sentences?  Or should I just abuse grammar in ways the English language never contemplated?
Yes.  Yes.

But I'm not a member of Dreamwidth
No problem. You can comment anonymously or through open ID

Can anyone play?
Yes! Please signal boost this to your flist, followers, and any other places you frequent. Come one, come all!
The more people who come and play, the better!

Can I spread the word?
Yes, please.  I'd love to create a nifty banner with an embed code but I fail at it.  So if you create one, I'll post it and everyone can use it.

How long will it go?
Tentatively, we'll close it on January 31, 2019.

Are there any rules about cross-posting?

Nope, you can post wherever you want, whenever you want. A lot of folks collected their responses together and posted them on AO3 under the 3 sentence fiction tag. 3SFs are a terrific prompt for remixes and could be helpful for Yuletide bears, too.

What about spoilers, content warnings, triggers, pairings, ratings, tags, and squick?
I thought about this.  It wasn't an issue the last 2 times I ran this but times change.  In my experience, this typically gets too big, moves too fast, and the stories are too short for content warnings and ratings. You should assume spoilers are fair game and that the initial poster and responder have opted to use no content warnings or tags. I've found personally that I can skim by stuff that, from the prompt, I can tell isn't my favorite flavor of delicious cake. Use your best judgment and be prepared to skip over things that aren't your thing.

And here, have some icons!

I'll start things off...

Edit to add on 12/18/2018 Please check out this update here. And this friending meme if you're so inclined here.

The first time she sees the sheriff’s son kissing that Hale boy, outside the veterinary clinic of all places, she tuts sadly to herself — not because she’s homophobic, her own grandson is gay and she loves him very much, but because she’d seen the sheriff’s son out on a date with none other than the younger Martin girl just the day before and it is such a shame for the boy to have so little respect for his girlfriend.

A week later, the incident has all but left her mind — she’s busy with her quilting club after all, and she’s never been particularly interested in gossip like many of her friends are — when she sees the Hale boy walking down the street downtown, hand in hand with the Martin girl, comfortable and casual like they’ve done the same a hundred times before.

It’s not until she sees them go into the little deli at the corner and she sees the sheriff’s son waiting for them with a brilliant smile on his face as the three of them exchange kisses that she understands that she’d misunderstood from the very beginning — it’s a different kind of relationship for sure, but it warms her heart to see how happy the three of them look together, especially after all the very public trauma they’ve had in their lives.

Viola searched her mind -- had she heard of this planet before? Was it at least in a familiar system? Reflexively, forgetting (for the hundredth time) that she had no data access, she tapped the corner of her jaw and subvocalised, "And what should I do in Illyria?"

When she speaks, her patients listen. That authority is something that can’t be learned as easily as morphology and syntax, and whenever Nyota ends up in the sickbay (which is more often than she’d like) she’s entranced by how deftly Christine gets everyone in line, even Dr. McCoy.

One day, after she’s back on her feet, she takes a moment to work up her courage and quietly says, “I love to hear you talk, you know.”

Oh, this is both heartbreaking and lovely. I love that she calls him father to both taunt and manipulate him a bit, and I can't help but wonder what, exactly, she wants.

Thank you so much for this. It was absolutely lovely! I wonder how her escort reacts to thse scenes....

The bit with her shawl at the end is lovely.

Thank you so much! This is absolutely charming. I love how Eleanor shows him how it's better to show than to tell. ;)

Erik Killmonger, Black Panther (movie)

[personal profile] nyctanthes 2018-12-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
He’s a self-made monster, he’ll be the first to admit it - crafted himself with exquisite attention to detail: each kill, each scar only a vulgar manifestation of what he’s assembled on the inside: cold anger, hot hatred, a garroted heart left in his chest to rot and stink, a reminder of his unwilling sacrifice.

A reminder of his willing ones too; you don't think he's gotten this far, assumed the mantle, by countenancing vapid calls for understanding and compassion; the smug pieties of turning the other cheek; the bourgeois sanctimony of letting go, forgiving and forgetting.

It was worth it, all of it, he thinks, as he stands in the tunnel - lights flashing, gloves off, no crown or mask or special flower powers for T’Challa to hide his unearned privilege behind, to use as shields to protect misbegotten gains – the largest hoard of buried treasure in the world, a pile on which he squats, encircles with a scaly, barbed tail. It was worth it, all of it, he thinks, because now he’s going to slay him, now he's going to make him pay

This is so well done, thank you my friend! I’ve always admired the way you can handle such heartrending themes with gentleness and insight and a defiant sense of hope. Thank you for turning the mantle Susan assumes from a burden into a glorious purpose — this is just beautiful.

Oh gosh, this is wonderful — Threepio’s dedication to Shmi, encoding what is important to her into the very heart of his programming — it’s both touching and makes so much sense!

Have I told you how much I love your Mara? I laughed out loud at Farm Boy paying for his drinks but not holding his liquor, and Mara reconsidering her decision if he keeps pestering her with questions!
