Pegasus Bridge, Normandy

The spousal unit and I spent 5 days in Normandy, France last year touring D-Day sites as well as Mont Saint Michel and a bit of Paris. We stayed in Bayeux (Tapestry!) and spent two days touring the British and Canadian becahes and sites, and then the American sites. We were able to go back and spend a full day at Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Gun Battery.

We had lunch at the Ham and Jam creperie right across the street from the sadly closed Gondree Cafe. It's so sad now to think of the US going to war with its French and British allies because Drump psychologically needs to invade Greenland.

NGL it was awesome to see the inspiration for my stories in real life and to realized that yeah, I got pretty damned close. I cried a few times, thinking of how much I wrote, how hard I worked at it, and wondering if I would ever get that again. Wonderful. And so personally devastating too.

And last, the gravesite of Lt. Den Brotheridge (maybe not the first casualty of D-Day). As it turns out, there's a very different tradition between American vs Canadian/British fallen. Americans are collected in single, solemn, uniform sites; Canadian and Britsh are interred where they fell. So Normandy is dotted with scores of tiny church graveyards with Canadians and British who died there.

The stained glass windows throughout Normandy churches, including the cathedral in Bayeux, are a mix of traditional Catholic iconography and signs and insignias of the D-Day operations, including parachutes, flying horses, St George and the Dragon, eagles, and service insignia, all in stained glass.

On the way out

No, don't panic (if you're still here and reading) not out, out as in dead. but on Tumblr someone commented, essentially, whoa, rthstewart is retiring? I didn't know she was that old. Yep. I'm old. Yep, I'm retiring 12/31/26 and will return to fic and chasing wolves and bears in American national parks. I am reminded of the Bujold quote, "Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards". None of those really apply. In my field, reputation probably matters more than honor and if I don't stop soon, I won't outlive the bastards.

Once you reach a certain age, I think we'd like to think there will be parties, balloons, and celebration of a 40+ year career. That there will be some sort of capstone. But, that doesn't seem to be the reality. ( short work blather )

In other news, I realized I never shared a particular highlight. I finally made it to Normandy! It was magical. I'll post some pics of my time (2 DAYS) at Pegasus Bridge, Bénouville.

Obligatory Political Post

I knew in 2016 it was coming. I knew it in my bones. This time, I allowed myself to hope and am far more gutted and despondent than before. My spawn, who was in high school in 2016, has been sending me memes and talking about what went wrong and how to fix it. And I told them, I was proud of them but this revolution will have to do without me this time and that I'm sorry I couldn't give them a better world. Then I started crying again. Crying now.

In November 2016, I made this post about continuing access to contraceptives and received some excellent comments on it At the time, I was more optimistic (when will I ever learn) about continued access. I'm long past needing contraception but for those of you still in that situation, stock up. Products will typically be good for at least 2 years -- look at expiration dates -- they are often good for longer but make a plan to protect yourself. Get a long-term solution in place. Being in a state that has voted for abortion access will not protect you if the pending cases before Trump appointed judges to yank the approval of mifepristone are successful or if we begin to see enforcement of the Comstock Act.

I went through all of this before not being alarmist. Not the case this time. Protect yourself and your loved ones. Get to safety if you can.

Also, now is a great time to launch a fraudulent medical product in January 2025. vitamins cure cancer! Go for it. I doubt anyone will stop you.

I don't know when I'll be able to update again. Much of this is repurposed and reconfigured but it's now in once place. There is also new content starting at chapter 5 and various pieces have been adjusted so that if all flows better.

The WW2 material is not as spot on as typical. I'm having some trouble with that for various reasons. Edmund should really be in Cairo with Dudley Clarke or he and Walker-Smythe should both be in London. While Operation Mincemeat is well researched and reported on, it was part of Operation Barclay and there is virtually nothing on that other than a few paragraphs repeated over and over. There is a real dearth of material on the things I've wanted Lucy to do and I even make fun of it a bit -- she's not going to be able to commandeer a ship, steal foodstuffs, and sail off to Greece. And while the British Red Cross is a good place to start for her, it was the International Red Cross that was involved in the grain shipments from Canada and South America. With my recent NFE story The Doctor Is In, the Red Cross now ties back to Narnia.

I have tweaked the parts with John Pevensie. He IS an ass and that hasn't changed. But going way back to the beginning of Oxfordshire 1942 I never wanted to deal with anyone actually IN the service. HA HA I know. One way I did that was to make John opposed to Peter's service -- which is not true to the time or patriotic. BUT if he had say, been a radio operator and heard men suffocating in submarines or dying at Dunkirk, yes, this begins to make sense. And further, it adds to the choking irony that he'll be really pissed to find out about -- that he went to war to keep his children safe only for a stupid ass Lion to rip them out of this world and march them into war.

I've also changed the letter that Helen writes to Edmund after Morgan's visit.

Narnia Fic Exchange

Woops.

So, first off, the Narnia Fic Exchange went live with 29 incredibly high quality stories. I received two amazing stories and wrote two related ones that fill out some Golden Age missing bits that also feed into the update I just made to Heart and Crow Make The Peace.

It then switches to Archenland and unexpected backstory on Queen Helen of Narnia. Mischief and Murder is backstory of Willa and Sallowpad from the Long Winter and then fast forward to post Culinary Diplomacy to the assassination attempts, which in turn leads to the establishment of the Royal Guard in The Palace Guard. Got that? Both stories tie into to the newly begun Heart and Crow Make The Peace. LOL. Oh self.

I received 2 wonderful stories and recommend you go read them and tell the authors how wonderful they are!!

Pupdate and proof of life

I know. I know. Work continues to be off the rails and I won't be back until regular writing until retirement. I did sign up for the Narnia Fic Exchange, so watch this space. I spend a month in Yellowstone and between wishing I was still back there and my bout with Covid in March, whatever brain cells I had left are not firing in full.

Thorin, my beloved Corgi, has degenerative myelopathy; his last days are coming very, very soon.
In the meantime, we have a new addition, Kili -- which should be pronounced as something other than how I heard it in the Hobbit movies, but whatever. Kee-lee. She's a tiny Pembroke Welsh Corgi and adorable in the way that only puppies can be. Our 6th dog, second Corgi, and first puppy. LOL. Kili is a menace and, to my regret, appears to be smarter than all our previous dogs combined.

I am vaguely hoping that a Harris presidency may inspire me as the Obama presidency did. It launched my return to fandom and, in this case, Narnia fic. I was so full of hope and optimism then -- foolishly assuming we had transcended gender and racial differences. I know, I know. Don't laugh.
But I've not felt hope in a long time. I'll also leave you with this brilliant reminder of November 5, 2020.

With Yuletide over, we'll be turning to the annual Three Sentence Ficathon! This year, to spare my poor, abused inbox, we'll be moving to the threesentenceficathon community. I'll be sharing mod duties (such as they are) with vialethe and wingedflight We'll probably start, as we did last year, in mid to late January and it will run for 30 days. So, go join the new community and get signed up for notifications. Andor US Thanksgiving

So, I may be making some poor life choices in what time tomorrow I try to watch Andor. I'm so nervous about what is going to happen. Minor speculation and spoilers below the link below.

I admit it's a little amusing to see ALL THE DRAMA on mastodon. I don't mean to make light of it -- some of it is quite serious. Some of it is just a bunch of people getting together who are all very smart and then suddenly WTF we have to mod too? How do we mod? We're used to someone ELSE doing this shit job. And really not having the first clue about it. I know there are issues with security, etc. on Mastodon but I'm not on it for anything except to try to keep up on a few things, and it's not terribly successful with that. I used Twitter as my aggregator for news, politics, federal government news, FDA, HHS, emergency alerts, traffic and weather, fandom, dogs, and fic. I mean, I followed Tom & Lorenzo, Daily Dot, I Pet That Dog, a bunch of law blogs, a bunch of oncologists and epidemiologists, and a lot of you. Nothing can yet replace all those things. I'm on Discord, Tumblr, here, mastodon, instagram, and put a bunch of my news sources in feedly. I's not the same at all but it's a start. I hate it.

And Thursday is American Thanksgiving and I used to post on LJ a long time ago about me meal day prep, then I went to Twitter, and well, you know.
So, I'm dry brining a bird with a half cup of kosher salt (about 70 grams) for two days and then will baste with butter and honey. We're only have 6 guests total this year -- I think I had about 20 last year. So I thought we had downsized but the group is evenly divided between hard crusty rolls and parker house rolls and between sausage stuffing and mashed potatoes, so... all four I suppose. But it's a smaller bird and smaller sizes/portions of everything and i might not even break out the good china. In recent years, as we've aged, we've drunk a lot less alcohol. But this time, I have 3 people under age 25, so I think the cycle begins again.

Dessert is unified around apple pie and I'm going to do a salted caramel chocolate tart. Oh and some random veg.

Twitter death spiral and red trickle and weed

As someone who gets a lot of political news, reads a lot of political news, is married to someone who checks Real Clear Politics every day (spousal unit is far more conservative than I am and he's not having a good day), and who has sat in on dozens of meetings with highly paid political consultants going on and on and on (and on and on) about the red wave, I was happy with yesterday's results, even if I continue to be horrified that a full 49% of the American electorate are .... ahem... do not see the world as I do. Thank you Gen Z and I continue to be deeply embarrassed by white women generally and especially those in my age cohort. Old white lady Privilege. It's a helluva of a drug.

Why do people not yet realize 1) Rs are lying in their fake polls and 2) a significant cohort of the electorate will not answer phone calls even of people they know! Stupid polls.

I wish the Ds could have held onto the House but give the rampant gerrymandering that wasn't going to happen. I was very pleased to see Fetterman do so well and really wish that Senate wins could have been pulled out in WI and OH. Vance? Really? WTF? And I'm very sad for Texas and really wish that Stacey had been able to beat that snake Kemp.

Also, I'm shocked, really shocked that adult recreational use didn't pass in North and South Dakota or ARK. I'd given several speeches predicting passage. Oops. I"m wondering if we're seeing the State Farm bureaus finally get organized. Weed legalization ignores typical political boundaries. It's hugely popular and SD had passed it in 2018 but then the bat shit cray Governor sued to stop it. ND had a similar measure pass its lower legislative body. So, I dunno. But maybe it's a bit like what you see in Kentucky and Senator Mitch McConnell -- they don't give a damn about cannabis unless it's hemp -- they LOVE hemp and hemp derived cannabinoids. However, due to poor cultivation practices, States like KY have a HUGE problem with "hot" hemp crop -- it's too high in delta-9 THC to be legal hemp (0.3% or less on a weight basis) but too low in THC to be marketable as marijuana. it's basically just crap marijuana. (I do a LOT of weed work).

In any event, I guess Elon Mush has been blathering in a Twitter thing all afternoon in a desperate attempt to keep advertisers. There's a whole thing where maybe you'll have to pay $8 a month for people to see your Tweets? Whut? I dont' even know. And now apparently they've decided to turn Twitter into... yes... a crypto Paypal or Venmo? But they promise returns! Fantastic returns! And debit cards!
I'm not a banking regulator -- but there's like -- A LOT. Apart from the SEC, FTC Financial Services, Division and CFPB (you wanna bet Director Rohit Chopra has got staff on it already) and the assortment of federal and state banking authorities... I can't even imagine what this mess looks like. Ponzi scheme comes to mind. LOL. it's pathetic.

First, thanks so much! I really appreciate you writing for me and I hope that you find something that inspires or interests you. Despite the character-centric match up, the fact is, I’m pretty agnostic as to characters. Whatever we've been matched on, don't worry because I like just about anything and what I don't like has to do with tone and characterization, not particular characters.

I've opted in for treats and gifts, yes, please and thank you!

DNW: it's a short list but pretty strongly held: excessive angst, gore or violence; body horror, any dub-con whatsoever. I have a strong preference for humor over angst and romance/sex rather than violence.

Indiana Jones

Anything with Marion and/or Indy. I have more thoughts on Marion, but have fun filling the enormous gaps for either of them. You could give Marion some backstory; where did she live? How did she end up in Mongolia? What did she do after she and Indy split? What happened after her father died? Invent a gal pal with some fem-slashy goodness on the side. She accidentally discovers Themyscira and learns a zillion languages. She becomes a Nazi hunter. She works with Peggy Carter. Handwave away Mutt if you need to.

For Indy and/or Marion, a story with smelly camels and donkeys, cursed tombs, loyal dogs, and finding lost cities and new species, and being good friends with the locals, drinking lots of gin and quinine to ward off malaria. Indy was in the OSS, so maybe Marion was too. Or in the SOE. What was she doing in the War? Was she a spy -- she'd be a great spy! Maybe they were spies together? I did a story where Indy was a Monuments Man at the end of the War -- you could build on that or give a role to Marion in scouring Europe for dangerous Nazi artifacts. Bonus for punching Nazis.

Or, maybe Marion and Indy are both eccentric professors and so you do an outside pov of their teaching assistants or administrators who are stuck covering for them all the time. Maybe Marion teaches the next class of lady adventurers. Most of all, have fun filling in the big gaps!

I selected any character because I'm fine with any of the characters because what I most want is any of those characters dealing with Dinosaurs. Or Kaiju. Or Dragons. More dinosaurs. Make them sentient. Do a fusion with Pern or Temeraire or Pacific Rim or Dinotopia. I love Ellie Sattler so great if you can include her, if you are so inclined. You could have Alan and Ellie kicking creationists from one end of the geological timeline to the next. Or Ian being reluctantly coerced into another dino adventure -- he is SO over it. Or Tim and Lex as adults Dealing With Dinosaurs. A key message of Michael Crichton's work is -- corporations and their lawyers are short sighted money grubbers. So feel free to play with that.

Temeraire

Even Temeraire himself is optional, so long as there are dragons. OCs are terrific here, too! Dragons, dragons, dragons. Dragon mythology. Famous dragons in history. Dragons and AU history, dragons and wars, dragon politicians post League of Dragons, dragons and xovers, dragons and fusion fics. Or Temeraire at the end of the story -- what does English society and the world look like with dragons as full participants? What do dragons think of Brexit? Donald Trump? The current 2022 crisis?

Temeraire also lends itself well to culture clash, characters, often out of time and place, sharing a different, more inclusive view, and often gently or more aggressively schooling (and possibly enlightening) those around them. I love Temeraire’s radical point of view (why can’t dragons vote?).

Rogue Squad/X Wing books
I'm here for the banter and high jinks and the Star Wars movie we didn't get. Yub, yub commander. I have a special fondness for Wedge, Talon Karrde and Booster, but really just anybody in those books, so long as it's the typical mess they get into and have to get out of on the basis of just being too damned clever and great fliers. I noted in the sign up that in Kenobi we learn that a Force sensitive child named Corran Horn ends up being smuggled with his mother onto the Jedi Path/refugee line to avoid Sith inquisitors. It's a blink and you miss it moment. (Mike Stackpole was thrilled). So if you are interested in developing that, go for it. Feel free to add my beloved Mara Jade. Add Luke, Leia, and/or Han if you want. Or Chewbacca.
1000 words of the Rogues drinking too much and getting thrown out of a bar is great by me. Or they have to defend their funding to the Coruscant Senate and, like, put on a suit and someone is trying to school them in how not to piss off a Senator with subpoena power and control of the appropriations.

Summary: Two months after D-Day, WC Reginald Tebbitt (code name Scribe) receives an urgent message from his agent, Mrs. Susan Caspian. Mrs. Caspian is still operating secretly in Nazi-occupied France under the name Jeanne-Louise Lambert (code name Rat). Tebbitt launches a desperate rescue mission and enlists the assistance of Rat's brother, Harold Linch aka Edmund Morgan aka Edmund Just aka Harold Jaller aka Justin Merle (code name Crow), who is reputed to be the fourth best forger in British Intelligence.

Yes, a return to war-time France, The Stone Gryphon and the Lucy and Edmund part of the story, Heart and Crow Make the Peace. the unwritten except I keep filling it in in bits and pieces. This follows the chapters, Heart and Crow Go To War and Kiss me Like a Soldier Headed For War, Rat and Sword Go To War, Black, White and Gray Wolf In Between (where Lucy runs away from school and Helen is visited by Briony, Hound and Nag and Chaos and Inspired Genius.Love and Rock Music is the primary Susan/Tebbitt shipper and has been insistent that I not kill off David Lowrey (who? Yeah, I know, but SHE remembers this minor character from TQSIT) so when I drew her for the Fic Exchange I decided to throw sense and most of my carefully constructed historical fiction research out the window and go for it.

The Star Wars/Narnia xover was for vialethe, syrena_of_the_lake, waywren and be_themoon. It turns out that in one of the recent Leia-focused Star Wars novels, the author Beth Revis gave Leia a sword and named it Rhindon, after Peter's sword. Really. So, well obviously I HAD TO USE IT. It's part of my Susan Joins the Rebels series.

And last, utter crack of the Washington DC insider variety, modern AU, Lucy Pevensie is a vampire crashing the conservative Heritage Foundation Halloween Party. Really, it's all SO GOOD. I can get a little frustrated with exchanges because they are never meaty enough for me. I love character stories and set up but having introduced some great concept or idea, then I want to see what happens next. Everything I've read for the NFE is so satisfying.
