You never forget your first vampire

I might have said before that my very first fandom, before Trek, before Luke and Han, before Indy, before Mrs. Peel and John Steed, was Dark Shadows.  And yep, 1972 sounds about right.

There are not words. Actually, there are.... Barnabas Collins with a lava lamp.

PS-- I have lots of cool pics to share courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] lotl101 and CG. Also, I've had a serious case of life imitating art (seriously, it's SCARY, really SCARY) and the work week that began with the lobotomy exercise has gotten ever so much worse.

But I now have a video of Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins with a lava lamp and nothing hurts

Though Angel unfortunately was my first vampire (I prefer Spike and Dru), I do have to say that was a pretty funny trailer. :-)

Oh, I meant to tell you that I'd uploaded edited 1-4 and 5 will go up shortly, with the new scene! GAWD, FINALLY. It's been a horrible week. But Barnabas Collins going after the tiny songmistress in the giant TV console was hilarious. "I'm on the top of the world, looking down on creation..."

There was an article in "Entertainment Weekly" about "Dark Shadows" not so long ago but watching this trailer makes it easier to understand the back story of the series.

I've read up on 1-4 (did not know if you wanted feedback on them yet but I did spot a few typos and whatnots) earlier in the week and I'm so looking forward to seeing 5 whenever it's ready. :-) I've also heard about your plans for Monday and I'm looking forward to hearing the details afterward.

Oh no! I hope work gets better! Also, may I comment that Barnabas is such an awesome name? And that the trailer looks awesome? I'm not familiar with the original, but as soon as I have spare time, I'll have to look into it.

I'll definitely take edits! Still. Thank you!

The film looks amazing! I will definitely be seeing it.

Jonny Lee Miller <3, just one out of a flawless cast, yay!

Sorry to hear work is tough.

One vampire I'm never going to forget - reading George R R Martin's Fevre Dream while on my way to the opera festival at Glyndebourne (where people still dress up in full finery for the occasion). I got off the train, and the first man I saw at the station was wearing full evening dress *with an opera cloak*. Not something you see everyday (and certainly not in surroundings as prosaic as Lewes station).

Sorry to hear the work week has only gotten worse. But this trailer - oh! I never watched the series. I suspect the title threw me off. (I am rather the weenie when it comes to "dark" subject matter.) So, did it always have this comedic element? Or is the comedy merely a result of the wonder of Johnny Depp at work? Regardless, it's clear to see he was having too much fun with this role. Which is good - that means we will too when we watch it. ;)

Oh my god, what is this fabulous crack. I need to see this.

I'm sorry your week is sucking! Hope things get better, like, instantly.

Crack. Utter crack. It's not anything like I'd expected, and it's not really Dark Shadows, but it does look so entertaining.

I had a similar reaction the first time I saw a Klingon...

Dark Shadows is campy, seriously campy and not remotely scary. I watched it in the 4th grade and it was so low budget it's incredible. Fake vampire teeth falling out of mouths and background sets falling down. I don't think it's something one actually LIKES -- more... appreciates. savors.... Also I think we are going to see ODAE go salmon fishing?

[identity profile] dm-lunsford.livejournal.com 2012-03-17 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I get it. Reminds me in a sense of The Man from UNCLE. Which wasn't quite as campy as that, at least not at first, but it definitely went that way during the final seasons. Still, one can develop a fond appreciation for such things, even as you know how bad it really is. ;)

I admit to being envious of you getting to see the fishing film. It has not yet come to theaters around here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will soon. I'd really like to see it, and ODAE, on the big screen before resorting to watching it on DVD.

Well that certainly doesn't look like the Dark Shadows I grew up with! Crazy.

The week worsened with a firing and some other crap, so alas, no. On the other hand, I saw Ewan McGregor in Salmon Fishing in Yemen so all is wonderful.

I know! It's got all the camp but ... it's WAY over the top. I'm not sure I'll actually see it? Not sure. It's just crazy.
