netflix daredevil, matt/claire

"What happened?" Matt asked as soon as she stepped inside.

"Uh? What?"

"Your fingers. What happened? Do they hurt?"

Claire took a moment to focus and encourage her reluctant mind to wake up and connect his questions to her reality.

Having pushed the pause button as soon as she got out of the hospital, just walking mechanically all the way back home, made the act rather exerting, still, Matt's alarmed tone made her replay the reason why she did that in the first place.

She had willingly scrapped the memory about an extremely mean patient who came into the ER hiding a tiny yet dangerously and bothersome blade. Luckily, no one received serious injuries, but that was just the beginning of her shift.

Yay.

She was definitely better when such pleasures were fast archived under the label 'HHH', aka the huge hassles hole.

Too bad she hadn't locked that drawer yet.

"Oh, this... No, don't worry, they're just a few cuts."

She shrugged and was about to reach for her soft slippers when Matt drew too much close to do anything.

"Cuts? They deep?"

He took the hand in question, trying to gauge the extent of her wounds. His mind running towards dead ends already. Did they hit any nerves? Were the edges of the skin cleanly cut? How would they cicatrize? Was there any dirt still inside?

Claire let him inspect her. Shoes still on. Jacket still on. Her bag starting to weigh heavily on her shoulder.

"Matt?"

"Yeah?"

As he enveloped her hand, she couldn't help to notice the warmth radiating from him. It was like she was the melting cheese in a toast.

"I'm fine," she said. "Really."

She was sure he felt it. The reassuring tone. The soft vibration and the effortless pull her facial muscles did to form a delicate smile.

"Yeah, sorry, I..." Matt shook his head lightly but didn't release her. "Let me take care of you."

Claire was about to follow up, saying that there was no need. She already took care of it, right after it happened, obviously. She worked in a hospital, duh. And to be fair, it wasn't so bad, they didn't even hurt, only bothersome. She had worse and Matt knew that too.

But, despite all that, she simply agreed.

Was it the fatigue that made her give in?

Finally picking up her slippers, she asked if he still had the cute band-aids Foggy gave him for his birthday.

He chuckled as he closed the cupboard.

Was it the fondness she perceived?

"Yeah, they're too small for my cuts."
