Re: As 'Twere, With A Defeated Joy (Hamlet, Claudius/Gertrude)

that's so delightful to hear, because sympathetic claudius/gertrude is sort of my specialty. i have a whole extended universe based on a specific production where claudius is charming and guilt-ridden and absolutely in love with his wife. king hamlet is pretty clearly implied to have been abusive, which you can tell from how quick hamlet and gertrude are to flinch at loud noises and rush to appease anyone who might be upset with them, and the way claudius is constantly hiding his hands and his emotions and gets tense whenever a scene threatens to break out into open conflict, and that just adds so much to all of their characters.
