He let her go; she was the one, not only the one but also the one he had walked away from time and time again, but this time, he let her go.

Jess wasn't 18 anymore; not far removed, but the years had aged him, sometimes like wine but other days, it felt like cheese, and he couldn't stand by and ask her to choose him when Rory said she loved someone else, even after they kissed. There was no fight this time.

He couldn't linger in the background, hoping to catch a moment of her time and her attention, draw out any lingering feelings that prompted her to kiss him back. If he had to grow and keep growing, he had to move on. Let her go. Had he been given a second chance, he would've fought in a way he hadn't before, but if she didn't want it, he wasn't going to fight at all. There was only so much breaking a heart could handle, and Jess was at his limit.

So she walked out the door, out of his life yet again, and he would pretend that he was okay.

That much he could do.

After all, there was no other choice.
