Gertrude knew old Hamlet had always been jealous of her relationship with his brother, suspecting (quite correctly) that there was more than just a friendship between two people who preferred intellect over muscle. But Claudius had been the one who envied the king, not just for his wife (there were ways around that), but for the throne and the power he held. And when it came to it, Envy won out over Jealousy.
