The sound of glass breaking and loud crash were followed by Lucky and Fanny barking just as loudly, making Kate look up, alarmed. She was even more freaked out when she saw who had just made such a ruckus stumbling through her window.
The person staggered to an upright position and found herself starring at the tip of an arrow, with Kate Bishop demanding, “Okay, okay, who are you and what have you done to my girlfriend?”
“I am your girlfriend,” Yelena said in a tired voice, moving her head so that the arrow was no longer directly pointing at her. She would step aside, but it was really too much effort right now. “Who else do you have entering your apartment through that window?”
“Yelena would never break anything, entering my apartment, she’s too good for that,” Kate said. Gesturing to the broken glass with her still poised arrow, she continued, “You must be an imposter, you’re wearing one of those nano mask things or something - “
Even as she said this, Kate realised that the dogs’ barking earlier had been in greeting rather than warning, and they were now both wagging their tails in delight, circling around this suspiciously clumsy Yelena.
“Yeah, well I’m really not an imposter,” she said, dropping down on the couch, apparently not bothered by the fact that Kate was still pointing her loaded bow at her. “I’m just as sick as a dog – sorry…”
The last word she directed at the dogs, as if dogs understood human idioms. Kate lowered the bow slightly to watch the dogs crowd around her, licking her face, making a heap of blonde hair and golden fur on the couch.
The other person just managed to push Fanny aside to peer at Kate. “Got any food?” she asked, her voice cracking.
Kate gingerly placed her bow and arrow down on the table and approached the couch. As she sat down, half wanting to push Lucky and half wanting to keep Lucky between her and the other person, just in case...Tentatively, Kate reached out to touch her cheek.
“You’re burning up!” she exclaimed. Standing up, she whirled around, looking frantically around the apartment. “You need – what do you need, tea and soup – or something – “
“Urgh…” Yelena groaned, “no. If you finally believe that I’m me, I’d kill for a slice of pizza from downstairs.”
