Anne never does learn to swim.

Richard promises he will teach her, and soon, but soon afterwards, he is recalled to his brother's side--and Mother will say it is not precisely ladylike, and Isabel support her; but she wishes desperately to have learned during that nightmarish crossing to Calais, wakes still with nightmares of water rushing to overwhelm her.

"Now you'll be safe," says Richard as he brings her back to Middleham, the ground sturdy beneath her feet, and Anne truly believes him; but years later, she discovers there's more than one deluge that might sweep them all away.
