Reacher does a double take at the sight of a familiar man in this middle-of-nowhere town in Pennsylvania, though, after a moment, he recalls that this must be Cody's hometown. Not wanting to draw attention to himself and his current investigation into the town's strangely un-aging mystery man by calling out directly, he signals to the waitress for his bill, hands her the cash, then ambles across the street, as if it's sheer coincidence that he happens to pass by the sheriff's car.
... has that man not aged one bit since over a decade ago, from the looks of it? Cody looks to be still in his mid-to-late twenties, when he ought to be hitting his mid-thirties, and probably showing the wear a bit from his service. Perhaps Reacher's investigation will turn up a great deal more than he was expecting.
