Mia sometimes wonders how things would have been different if, that first summer on Peregrine Island, instead of distancing herself from camp outcast Midge Rayne while basking in the adoration of the likes of Kayleigh and Jenna, she’d been open about the fact that she and Midge had been childhood friends.
Maybe she wouldn’t have ended up becoming the camp queen bee, maybe a couple of them would have looked down on her, but Mia now understands how superficial all these considerations truly are; she’d looked down on Alex and Harry when she first met them as well, but now she realises they’re the best friends she has.
If Mia had included Midge among their crowd, hadn’t hidden their shared history from the others, none of them would have lost their memories of that year of their life, and Midge would have still been there with them today.
The A List, Mia
