Luke draws the monsters to keep them out of his head and sometimes it works, but he can pull a face from anything so he’s still scared most of the time. He writes a sign declaring girls are not allowed in his treehouse, but makes an exception for Abigail because she is nice and quiet and doesn’t treat him like a baby who doesn’t know anything.

The world out there is hungry and stupid and doesn’t care about him or anyone else, but between these wooden walls he has made a world all his own.
