Star Trek TOS - T'Pring/Uhura, Starfleet officer!T'Pring AU, distractions

Starfleet's dress-code regulation reflected the chaotic nature of humanity rather well: There were a number of pieces, all in similar style but different cuts, offered for personnel to use. Hair and accessories were left to the individual's discretion. Clothing or other adornments of cultural significance could be added to the uniform as needed.

There was some order to it, but the space left for the chaotic, emotional choices of humans and andorians and so many other species 'led by their hearts', as humans liked to say, guaranteed a wide variety of presentation in any given Starfleet ship or starbase.

T'Pring did see the logic of it, and she had indeed kept the complicated hair style favored by her House (Spock's raised eyebrow was answered by a chilled side-eye), but there were moments were T'Pring questioned the efficiency of such dressing codes.

For instance, she had gone to the mess hall in search of Spock and the unsatisfactory Plomeek soup available on ship. She stood by the doors, stock still and only distractedly moving to the side once crewmates began moving around her, all thoughts of her once hated promised, now tentative friend or the unflavored soup gone from her mind.

Lieutenant Uhura laughed and joked with Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand, chair moved to the side as she played a song in some Earth stringed instrument, resting across her seat, her shapely legs seemingly going on for much longer than T'Pring knew, logically, they did.

The light of the mess hall was even and unflattering to every single person stepping inside it, and yet Lieutenant Uhura seemed to glow under it, some kind of vision sent to distract and tempt T'Pring away from her objectives. Like getting soup in a timely manner.

"Should I accompany you to their table? I am sure your company would be welcome to them."

T'Pring did not jump, merely raised an eyebrow at Spock's sudden appearance.

"I was merely observing human behavior as I waited. Now that your duties to the Captain have been completed, may we continue? There is new data we must discuss."

The faint green tinge to Spock's cheeks guaranteed nothing but scientific facts and theories would be talked about during their meal, as was T'Pring's preference.

(one day I will follow the instructions and write 3 sentences instead of going off on random tangents. But that day is not today.)
