Sexual dimorphism in British heraldic gryphons (really!)

Only the females have wings, all the better to soar over the wastes, seeking out the finest, rarest and best to bring home to adorn their nests.

The males have sharp spines instead.

The female flies all the stronger for knowing her eggs to be well guarded.
