“That would be hail,” Hugh says when one of the kids shrieks at that sickening shattering sound, like it’s nothing at all, like somehow it doesn’t tear at the heart of him.

But that’s what a parent is for, to shield them from the world and turn a terrifying experience into something they’ll be able to laugh about years down the line, so if Olivia has to shove down her own fear to help these precious children with theirs, that’s what she’ll do.
