She was just returning a book she had borrowed from Teddy, so it seemed very natural that she should let herself into the big house. That was how it had always been after all.
And when she heard his and Amy's voices laughing gently she thought nothing of it. Although, in retrospect, she probably should have thought something of it because Teddy was not the sort to laugh gently at all.
Nevertheless, she burst into the library just as she burst into any room in her domain, and that's when she saw Amy sitting in Teddy's lap, cupping his face and tipping it up so she could grace his lips with a kiss. She let out a yelp of surprise, which made things infinitely worse. Amy tumbled to the floor as Teddy stood up too quickly, his face very red.
'Oh! Hi! We--uh--we weren't expecting--' Teddy stammered, trying to neaten his hair.
'Don't you ever knock?' Amy demanded as she pushed herself up. Laurie hastened to help her a moment too late. She dusted herself down and gave him a despairing look. Apologetically, he put an arm around her waist and the pair stood facing Jo.
She felt herself go scarlet, and held up the book she had been clutching. 'Thought you might want this back,' she mumbled, fairly threw it at a side table, and rushed from the room. She sprinted all the way back home and up to her garret, where she pulled a blanket over her head and hid there until she could say she had cleansed her brain from what she had just seen.
