The Beavers' dam was warm and homey, and the children soon felt the chill of the winter melt away as they sat by the fire and enjoyed their meal. But at last, Zardeenah told their hosts thank you, for it was growing dark outside and she felt sure that they had been gone from the Professor's house too long. Their hosts protested, but Tash was already rising to grab his coat--only to pause when he realized one of their number was missing.

"Jadis?" he called, and repeated himself louder when there was no answer.

"But where could she have gone?" asked Zardeenah with growing unease.

The Beavers looked to each other and then, very quietly, Mrs. Beaver suggested, "She'll have gone to the White Wizard, I expect. This is not good at all. You won't be able to just go and get her back."

Until this point, Aslan had been sitting very quietly at the table, his brow furrowed in concern. Now, he asked, "But what can we do?"

"Well," said Mr. Beaver, leaning close, "They say the Pevensies are on the move."
