People had always given him shit for how much he took care of his hair, especially before he'd dated Nancy, and maybe it was because of that that he was kind of ashamed to admit that he'd shit-talked other guys for the same sorts of reasons just to look cool.
Maybe it was the guilt, maybe it was the promise of good music and drinks, or maybe it was the way Evan grinned at him while making the invitation -- but he'd finally found himself at that bar, a little tenser than he'd hoped to appear, collar popped like a barrier between himself and the possibilities. He watched a group of laughing boys take to the dance floor, and unintentionally made eye contact with one of them.
The guy winked at him. And while friends immediately called the stranger away, Steve was left feeling distinctly shocked at how relaxed he felt, at how he'd wanted to smile back, maybe even dance himself. Maybe try something new.
By the time Evan came back with drinks, Steve was running his hand through his hair with an eye on the mirror behind the bar, and he'd never felt cooler.
