Fill: The Untamed, Jin Guangyao/Nie Mingjue

Turning people away while assuring them their demands will be passed on to his father is one of Jin Guangyao's many duties that are jarringly familiar, as though despite the improvement of his situation he's still the boy who'd obsequiously turned away the brothel's patrons when the lady they asked for was spoken for, or the youth who'd once maneuvered his way into earning Nie Mingjue's trust and regard.

Good manners and quick wits; when Jin Guangyao bows his apologies he's grateful that his position is now good enough that he no longer needs to show the back of his neck, and as he does his eye catches on Nie Mingjue, staring at him - as though he too, is struck by the familiarity or the strangeness - the dozen of people between them nothing but shadows.

Jin Guangyao isn't sure what to make of Nie Mingjue's expression - which would be galling if Jin Guangyao had any more use of him - and they're in LanlingJin, where Nie Mingjue wouldn't dare make a scene, and maybe Jin Guangyao feels like flaunting the shrinking difference between their social positions (maybe he is a little galled after all), so he lets himself smile deeper and casts his voice just so.

He watches the smooth stone of his next polite lie reach Nie Mingjue, and Nie Mingjue's lips curl before he whips away - disgust and anger, but what else was there to expect?

Around them the party goes on, unaware of the strike; Jin Guangyao keeps interfering with the people hoping to bother his father for favours, and when he raises his voice, sometimes, out of the corner of his eyes, he can see Nie Mingjue's towering figure go still.
