it's been a bit since i've thought about the crains, and i love how much of their family dynamic and hugh and olivia's approach to parenting you brought out in this snippet. hugh trying to make the scary things less scary by being matter-of-fact and humorous about it, and olivia shoving down her fear so she can do the same, and 'that’s what a parent is for, to shield them from the world and turn a terrifying experience into something they’ll be able to laugh about years down the line' ... that urge to protect her children from the big bad world is already so strong in her, and the house is just going to make it worse and worse.
