A Spare Oom Timeline for The Stone Gryphon Parts 1 and 2, through TQSiT, Chapter 17, because you asked
It might not be a 100% or add up completely, but this here's a timeline as best I can manage. By the way, thanks so much. The reviews have been astonishing and I'm truly grateful.
January 20
The Wannsee Conference of top Nazi leaders is held outside Berlin to address the “Final Solution” to Jews of Europe. The total meeting time is less than 90 minutes.
January – August – Operation Paukenschlag ("drumbeat") or “Second Happy Time” in the Second Battle of the Atlantic during which Axis submarines attacked merchant shipping along the east coast of North America. Axis submarines sank 609 ships and lost only 22 U-boats.
May – The New York Times reports that more than 400,000 Jews machine-gunned by Nazis in the Baltic countries, Poland, and Russia.
Late May – early June -- The Pevensies prepare for departures: Susan and her parents to America; Edmund and Lucy to Harold and Alberta Scrubb’s home; Peter to Oxford with Professor Digory Kirke.
May 27-June 29 – Second Axis Egyptian Offensive – General Rommel launches an offensive against Egypt. By the end, Axis forces will be within 70 miles of Alexandria and access to the Nile River.
Late May-early June: Susan and her mother arrive in Washington; Susan inserts herself into the office of Colonel Walker-Smythe and begins “babysitting” Wing Commander Reginald Tebbitt. Susan meets Guy Hill and his extended family, including Agnes.
Edmund receives Susan’s first letters about rumor mongering.
Early June – The Enigma decoding machine in Bletchley Park, England, decodes a message that the Nazis are operating death camp for Jews in Chelmno, Poland
June 13 – Rommel’s Korps destroy 138 British tanks in and around the Knightsbridge pocket. Lieutenant General Ritchie, without informing General Auchinleck, who wanted to hold west of Tobruk, orders pull back towards Tobruk. Allied forces begin retreating east, toward El Alamein.
June 14 – Asim bin Kalil dreams of the Dawn Treader
June 15 – Mary Anning Russell writes to Digory Kirke and invites herself and her husband, Richard, to tea.
June 1942 – Roosevelt meets with Soviet minister Molotov in Washington and promises 120,000 men in Europe to relieve the pressure on the Eastern Front. Reluctantly, Churchill signs the Washington Communique promising a second front in 1942 – part of what will create the pressure for Operation Rutter (eventually Jubilee) the Raid at Dieppe, France.
June 19 Churchill and Roosevelt meet to discuss conflicting offensive plans which might be launched against Germany in 1942, including the Dieppe Raid. Discussion also begins on operation 'Gymnast', which was the proposed Anglo-American landing in French North Africa later in the year.
June 19 (approx) – Peter and Richard begin meeting. Asim and Peter begin meeting and discussing the North Africa desert campaign.
June 21 – Tobruk falls and Roosevelt vows support.
Mid- late June – Queen Susan and Lord Peridan design the Ettin Cookbook on how to cook and eat humans. The Cookbook is planted at an Ettin safehouse and found by Calormene security forces. There is a State dinner at the Narnian Residence, with the Tisroc and High King in attendance. Peridan seduces the Tarkheena Masikah to obtain her support for the rearming of the Lone Islands campaign; Queen Susan and Sallowpad deal with a muckraker, trading the Cookbook for information about the Tisroc’s General in the Telmar campaign.
June 25 – General Dwight D. Eisenhower is appointed to command US forces in the European Theatre. General Auchinleck relieves General Ritchie and takes command of the Eighth Army.
June 25 – The London Daily Telegraph reports, “More than 700,000 Polish Jews have been slaughtered by the Germans in the greatest massacres in the world’s history.”
June 26 – Peter and Asim meet and discuss the fall of Tobruk.
June 30 – A headline in the London Daily Telegraph reads: “More Than 1,000,000 Jews Killed In Europe.”
June 30 – Rommel reaches El Alamein. The port facilities at Alexandria are prepared for demolition, should the Axis forces not be stopped at El Alamein. In what became known as Ash Wednesday, British HQ is Cairo begins to destroy classified papers and prepares for evacuation to Palestine.
Edmund receives letters from Susan about the Cookbook and the rearming of North Africa.
June-July 1942 – The New York Times highlights articles on Christian victims of the Germans rather than on Jewish victims.
Early-mid July – Susan realizes that the Nazis are murdering Jewish civilians; she discusses it with Colonel Walker-Smyth; Aslan visits her.
Queen Susan and Lord Peridan steal papers of the Grand Vizier; Prince Cor announces his unit is deployed north to engage the Ettins in a Raid on the Northern Marshes.
July 3 Allied forces hold the line at El Alamein. Rommel falls back and digs in.
July 13 – Convoy AS-4 sails from New York for the Suez and the rearming of the Allied Forces, with tanks and 85 million pounds of war materiel. The SS Fairport holds all the tanks. Captain Lowrey is deployed to Europe to participate in Operation Jubilee.
Edmund receives Susan’s letter about Nazi extermination of Jews. He deciphers it and discusses it with Lucy.
July 14-15 – Queen Susan deals with crier sheet owner Tarkheena Lasaraleen who agrees to provide damaging information on the Grand Vizier. Sallowpad orders Lord Peridan to orchestrate the exchange.
July 16 – U-161 torpedoes and sinks the SS Fairport
July 20 – Mussolini abandons his planned victory march through Cairo and returns to Rome. Asim and Peter meet and discuss the North Africa campaign. Susan, Tebbitt, and Colonel Walker-Smythe attend Pentagon meeting about leaks from the British Embassy.
July 26 – First Battle of El Alamein ends.
July 29 – SS Seatrain Texas carrying a full load of cargo, including 250 tanks departs for the Suez
Edmund receives letter from Susan about the sinking of the Fairport.
August 3– Party at the Narnia residence to celebrate the delivery of more Tanks to North Africa and holding the line at El Alamein.
August 5 – Churchill visits the Eighth Army at El Alamein and decides to replace General Auchinleck.
August 8 – General Dwight D. Eisenhower is appointed as commander-in-chief of allied forces preparing to invade North Africa.
August 7 General Gott, the Eighth Army's commander designate, is shot down while en route for Cairo. Montgomery is chosen instead. Peter and Asim meet and discuss the change.
Edmund receives his last letter from Susan reciting The Rule of Threes.
August 6-12; Susan writes her letter to Edmund, sends it, and it is intercepted by censors.
Aug 10-14 – Richard and Peter meet in the garden; Richard divines Peter’s “secret.” They meet regularly.
August 11 – A report from Gerhardt M. Riegner Secretary World Jewish Congress Geneva arrives at the US State Department advising of intelligence by an individual in Hitler’s offices of a Nazi plan to exterminate Jews.
August 14 – Susan’s letter arrives in England from Washington with instructions to intelligence officials to meet with and deal with Edmund. Asim meets with Edmund in Cambridge
Richard is hospitalized.
August 19 – Codenamed operation 'Jubilee', 6,100 British and Canadian troops conduct a raid-in-force against the port of Dieppe, which ends in disaster. In less than 10 hours of battle, the British and Canadian forces lose 1,380 killed, 1,600 wounded, 2,000 prisoners.
Captain Lowrey is reported missing.
August 20 – Susan departs Washington for the return to England.
**August 21 Edmund, Lucy and Eustace travel to Narnia; Peter departs Oxford for Cambridge; the Cat visits Richard and Asim.
** Eustace’s Journal in TVoDT actually shows an earlier date in August. This is either a “flint” on my part, or Eustace is confused about his dates. Take your pick.
August 22-23 – Edmund, Lucy, Eustace and Peter reunite; attend Dieppe memorial in Cambridge. Peter begins to read Susan’s letters.
