I think the alliteration helps. As for the soulless thing is that myths and stories are in way more agreement with mermaids being soulless than I would have thought? You The Little Mermaid, but I can think of other stories like one fairytale where a mermaid marries a human and gets angry later when one of her children gets baptized so that child gets a soul, so they can never become a mermaid.
