Madoka Magica is an anime series about magical girls fighting monsters. Except instead of wacky hijinks, toss in psychological horror instead. At the heart of the story is the relationship of two girls, one who wants to help others (she's the one in my icon) and the other girl who will do anything to save her (she's the one in this fill).

It's a great series--very influential for good and bad on the genre--and pretty short at 12 thirty minute episodes. It's on netflix, if you have an account there.
