White Collar, Rachel

She has studied Neal Caffrey for months and makes sure that "Rebecca" is exactly what he thinks he wants - clever, kind, a bit shy and awkward yet daring, innocent but corruptible, passionate, art-loving, perfect. She doesn't stop at character either and tailors her appearance just right - her glasses and hairstyle to suggest a lack of experience and a certain unawareness of her beauty; red hair to remind Neal of Sara, but choosing a different shade, knowing that Rebecca would "overcome" her doubts where Sara was too strong-willed to sacrifice her principles; she watches old security tapes of Kate and learns to mimic some of her expressions and gestures - not much but just enough to stir some subconscious longing and melancholy.

The irony here is that long-term, the illusion of Rebecca would never work. Whether he realized it or not, Neal liked and needed women that stood up to him and challenged him; Rachel's new construct is simply too compliant. She'd either grow a pair or he would ultimately ruin the relationship with his usual bullshit; one way or another, the fairytale would be over. But it would take time for him to realize that, and until then, "Rebecca" will be a dream come true. It might even teach Caffrey a thing or two about himself, provided he's still alive and free when she's done with him.

"Rebecca" would feel sorry for him.

Rachel pretends not to pay any attention as Neal and Hagen enter the room but still makes sure to be well in view where Neal can see her. Her moment comes in just a little while.

"Excuse me. I'd like to request a book for study."

Privately, Rachel smiles. This is going to be fun.
