Herpo's really too early for the scientific method, but I figure breeding monstrous creatures is probably more similar to livestock breeding in general, where one needs to keep careful track of bloodlines and such and therefore comes pretty close to a trial-and-error experimental method just without our particular theoretical framework behind it. And alchemists were certainly known to perform experiments that at least theoretically touched upon souls. :)
