Salyss holds her arms up to the light, showing off skin so pale it is nearly translucent, dark veins tracing rivers down her forearms. Carinault thinks he sees one of them move, subtly, undulating like a worm.

"I thought I was immune," she says with a rueful smile, something with little lamprey teeth chewing its way out of her cheek.
