Matron’s frown was audible through the scratchy connection, and Mrs. Pevensie sighed. “There’s no problem with Susan,” Matron repeated, trying in vain to elicit the inevitable question of where the problem did lie (it was Lucy, of course, riling the rector or inciting rebellion in the refectory, it was always Lucy), but Mrs. Pevensie cut her off with “Then you must not be looking closely enough. Whatever Lucy is up to, Susan is in up to her neck, but she’s far more careful about not getting caught.”
