I hear you on the human visuals. Personally, I am quite happy using animal and object visuals, but not humans. I spent eons hunting down the Exact Right images of Arabians to use as the four horses Rabadash presents in SGS, and I was mostly happy with the result. I do not, as a rule, do human visuals unless the people happen to come clad in the garments that I am studying for purposes of creating atmosphere in my own head, and even then I mostly try to ignore the people to focus on the clothing.
There were two exceptions to that No Humans rule, and only two; once I thought the girl wearing a gown I was studying looked strikingly like Susan might, and there was another instance where I saw an actress whose dimples immediately made me think of Lucy, although I did not (and do not) picture that actress's face in my mind when I write Narnia fic at all.
Honestly, when I write Lucy more than anything else I think of Little A. It is very difficult for me to separate the two in my mind. Fortunately Little A is far too tiny for me to actually envision HER when I am writing Lucy; I stick purely to similarities of personality-- giggly, exuberant, affectionate and incredibly fierce!
